Pie for Breakfast, with two years of preparation, finally opened the door in North Oakland on June 4th. The mascot of Pie for Breakfast is so cute, and I can’t stop myself to eat here. It’s owned by Chef, who is also the owner of Legume and bar Butterjoint. Three restaurants are in one street; the chef wants to create an “ecosystem.” The environment in Pie for Breakfast is quiet and comfortable: sky-blue walls with mirror decorations and paintings; orange chairs; metal tops and a long, stainless bar. Waiters are professional and friendly. Pie for Breakfast open seven days a week, from 8 am to 3 pm. They offer breakfast, lunch, brunch, and alcohols. Lots of options.
Food I ordered
I often order two eggs, home fries, salt rising bread toast, and pork sausage. I highly recommend eggs in Pie for Breakfast since they have fresh eggs and an excellent cook. I only eat over easy fried egg here since there is no unpleasant smell in runny yolk. Same in the bread. It’s cooked well, a bit dry and crispy. Currently, I have been four to five breakfast&brunch restaurants, and I always order two-eggs in the first time. Reasonably to say, I think the one in Pie for Breakfast is the best. The pork sausage is juicy, with a little spicy.
However, I am disappointed with the pancake. It’s dense and dry, with a little maple sugar and butter. I wonder the cook might press down the pancakes in the pan and squeeze all air out. The awful pancake almost destroyed a morning, and I am glad port sausage saved it. A kind server asked me if I like it, and I can only offer her a polite small. I’m not sure if the depressing taste is an accident or not, but I’m sure I will not order pancake in Pie For Breakfast again.
Tips:
Most of the comments in Yelp mention more than 20 minutes waiting in line. Someone waits for an hour. In the official website in Pie For Breakfast, they said: ” The longest waits are on the weekends at brunch” [1]. From my experience, there is always a sit from Monday to Friday, and there is always a line on weekends. So, I eat breakfast in Food for thought deli with two-minutes walking. Some comments are about long preparing time for pie. In the website, the chef said: “we have a tiny pastry kitchen and can only make enough pies at this time to satisfy the demand of the dining room [1]”. If you want to have a pie in rush hour, it’s better to ask waiting time before ordering. All in all, Pie for Breakfast is a beautiful place to go from Monday to Friday, with delicious eggs and coffees.
